Witchampton Vs The 'Legends'

Match Seventeen; 23rd August 2008

The Witches keep Their Heads Safely Above Water picking up valuable points

In the penultimate match of the season the witches won the toss and elected to field. The game was off to a flying start with the first ball of the first innings (bowled by Steven Ashford) as he sent the Winton opener back with not a run to his name. Winton managed to score a well worked 139 a/o ; the main contributors to the witches bowling attack were Marc Hayter 4-34, Stewart Hibberd 2-26 and Ian Kelly 1-26. In reply Witchampton fell just short making 128 a/o the top scorers were Ian Kelly 39 and Steven Ashford 26: good batting from Gavin Wayman helped the witches to extra bonus points to finish the game with 10 points, meaning that we need just a point in the final encounter to secure safety in division 2. However it wasn’t quite enough to win the game.

Match Fourteen; 2nd August 2008

A close game at Hamworthy Rec saw Witchampton lose by 13 runs, but still managing to pick up the extra bonus points to help there battle against relegation to Division Three.  After a mixed day in the field the Witches bowled Hamworthy out 173 (Stewart Hibberd 3-17 and Adam Croker 2-3  the pick of the bowlers).

In reply Witchampton came close but were unable to sneak over the line, falling 13 runs short on 160-9 ( Ian Kelly 40 and Steve Ashford 35 the top scores).

Match Thirteen; 26th July 2008

Match report by Liam Kelly

Disaster!

A depleted Witchampton team won the toss and elected to bat and were soon in trouble with the usually reliable top order batsmen sittled for very little: only Jack Walker (top scoring with 14) and Stewart Hibberd left Unbeaten managed to establish themselves and make any real contributions. Disaster struck the witches when the final man went leaving Witchampton a/o 65. In reply Wimborne confidently secured victory without any wickets lost.

 Match Twelve; 19th July 2008

With a number of changes again to the Witchampton side, saw us win the toss and bat first. A mixed performance with the bat saw the witches get to 176 a/o, with Jack Walker (60) and Adam Croker (44) the star performers with the bat.
In reply the ‘Witches’ bowled well at a weak Shaftesbury side with only 9 men to reduce them to 55 a/o. Stewart Hibberd 3-17 and Ian Kelly 3-1(hat-trick ball next week) Leading the way with the ball. A good 20 point victory to move us up one place in the league.

Match Eleven; 12th July 2008

With a number of changes in personnel from last weeks win, Witchampton won the toss and chose to field on a damp pitch. Witchampton bowled well at times, but lacked
consistency. Dorchester posted a score of 225 for the loss of nine wickets.  Steve Ashford picked up 4 wickets.

Witchampton got off to a promising start with the bat but three wickets in a few overs slowed the progress.  Ian Kelly (63) and Will Connor( 65) got things back on track with a solid partnership of 92 and the target looked to be very achievable. However some tight overs from Dorch and a few wickets falling, meant a close finish was in store.  It came down to the last ball with three runs required to win, but unfortunately another wicket was lost. A good effort to get so close but also disappointing not to come away with the win.

Match Ten; 5th July 2008

The half way mark of season saw a second win for the Witches over Pavilion Sports this season in the only game again in Div 2 to be completed. After winning the toss and putting the opposition in on a green wicket, Steven Ashford bowled a very economical spell of 12 overs and picking two early wickets, (12ov-5m-13-2) to restrict Pavilion to 135-5. In Reply after an early loss of the first wicket, Andy ‘Nipper’ Hopkins (25) and Adam Croker (38) steadied the ship, before Adam and Will Connor (58) put on a partnership of 72 to guide the Witches close to victory, before both getting out. However no more wickets fell and the Witches finished with a comfortable 6 wicket victory inside 31 overs.

Match Nine; 28th June 2008

A win for the Witches!!!!  Batting first at the ‘park’, Witchampton scored 132-9 with Ian Kelly (63 n.o) again showing his determination by batting the entire 45 overs. With very little support from the top/middle order, it was left to Stewart Hibberd (17) and young Liam Kelly to provide some company for Ian in the middle. Big thanks to Liam for helping his dad past 50 in a last wicket undefeated stand of 21. In reply the Witchampton bowlers were all over Ferndown and bowling the league leaders out for 103. With Stewart Hibberd switching from slow to medium pacers to return figures of 12ov-5m-16-5 and Steven Ashford returning to the bowling front after 4 years, to post a respectable 1-40 of eight overs. Also a quick mention to Will Connor who held 4 catches in the out field. Well done lads, lets build on this!!!!!!

Match Eight;  21st June 2008

A very cold wet day saw Witchampton travel to Winton Sports to play in the only fixture completed in Division 2 this weekend. After another day lost toss, Witchampton found themselves in the field. But in helpful conditions and some accurate bowling, Winton were bowled out for 100. With Ian Kelly (4-26) and Marc Hayter (2-17) the pick of a fine bowling attack.  However the same could not be said about the batting and with only Ben Andrews (32) making any real contribution, Witchampton found themselves 59 a/o.

Seventh  Match;  14th June 2008

A warm sunny day at Witchampton park saw the ‘witches’ lose the toss and face a long day in sunshine chasing the ball. A good effort in the field from the team restricted Branksome CC to 212-9 after they got off to a flying start. Ian Kelly 4-52 and Adam Croker 2-20 the pick of the bowlers. Our skipper Marc ‘Moos’ Hayter showed the way with two fine catches. In reply Witchampton Managed a disappointing 139 a/o with Steven Ashford top scoring with 30 and Adam Croker 26 the main contributors with the bat.
